For my grandson's school fall festival I made these cookies. They are a basic soft and chewy chocolate chip cookie with a large chocolate chip on top and legs added with more chocolate.

Cookie Dough:

2-1/4 c. all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
2 sticks unsalted butter, softened
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. brown sugar
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. vanilla extract
2 eggs, room temperature
2 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 c. walnuts (optional)

                                                    Decoration:

                                                             1/2 c. dark chocolate chips

  1. Preheat oven 350F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl whisk together flour and baking soda.
  3. In mixer bowl, beat butter with both sugars until fluffy.
  4. Beat in salt, vanilla and eggs until well combined.
  5. Add flour mixture until just combined.
  6. Stir in semi-sweet chocolate chips and walnuts.
  7. Drop tablespoon size balls of dough 2 inches apart onto baking sheet.
  8. Bake until cookies are golden around edges but still soft in center, 8-10 minutes.
  9. Decoration: Place 1 large dark chocolate chip on top of each cookie. When the chip starts to melt take a toothpick and carefully dip it in the melting chocolate and drag it to the sides of the chip to make legs. You can also melt chocolate and put in a pastry bag with a very tiny tip to make legs. I tried both ways.

Results: The cookies are easy to make and they are delicious. For the school I didn't put nuts in the batter. The  legs were a challenge. First, I melted chocolate and put it in a squeeze bottle. The lid on the bottle popped off and made a huge mess. Second, I tried the pastry bag with a tiny tip. At this point I had chocolate everywhere.  It was a mess! The chocolate kept caking inside the tip.  On my third attempt I used the toothpick. It worked just fine. However, I did have some melted chocolate near by to supplement. Sometimes the chocolate chip flattened making the spider look more like a crab, as described by a taster.

Bottom Line: This is one of my favorite chocolate chip cookie recipes. So, definitely a keeper.

Please share this recipe and blog with cookie lovers and those who particularly love spiders.  Tim, this one is for you. LYTM  Thanks.
